1. News : Guinea

Guinea has long been beset by political instability. Recent unrest started after the dismissal of a senior commander in the special forces — provoking some of its highly trained members to rebel and occupy the presidential palace.

  • Guinea is a country in West Africa, bordered on the west by the Atlantic Ocean
  • The Gulf of Guinea is the north-easternmost part of the tropical Atlantic Ocean
  • The intersection of the Equator and Prime Meridian (zero degrees latitude and longitude) is in this gulf.
  • The Guinea Current is a slow warm water current that flows to the east along the Guinea coast of West Africa. It has some similarity to the Equatorial Counter Current in the Indian and Pacific Oceans.

2. News : Houthis

Houthis are an armed rebel group belonging to the Zaidi Shia sect fighting against the government of Yemen. Traditionally, the Houthis have been concentrated in the northwestern Saada Province of Yemen.

  • Yemen Conflict:
    • Since 2014, Yemen has been facing a multi-sided conflict involving local, regional, and international actors.
    • The Houthis, a group of Zaidi Shia Muslims who ruled a kingdom there for nearly 1,000 years, used widespread anger against President Hadi’s decision to postpone long-awaited elections and his stalled negotiations over a new constitution.
    • They marched from their stronghold of Saada province to the capital Sanaa and surrounded the presidential palace, placing Hadi under house arrest.
