1. News : Chakmas and Hajongs

Chakma organisations have slammed the proposed deportation of 60,000 people belonging to the Chakma and Hajong communities from Arunachal Pradesh.

  • Chakmas and Hajongs were originally residents of the Chittagong Hill Tracts of erstwhile East Pakistan, who had to flee when their land was submerged by the Kaptai dam project in the 1960s.
  • The Chakmas, who are Buddhist, and Hajongs, who are Hindus, also faced religious persecution in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh).
  • Chakmas and Hajongs entered India through the then Lushai Hills district of Assam (now Mizoram).
  • At present, they do not posses citizenship and land rights, but are provided basic amenities by the state government. Currently, Chakmas and Hajongs are citizens by birth as per Section 3(1) of the Citizenship Act and the eligible portion of their population exercise the right to vote as citizens of India (they were given voting rights in 2004).
  • In Assam Chakma people have scheduled tribe status.

2. News :Implementation of NEP by Karnataka

Karnataka has become the first state to start the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

  • The policy provides for reforms at all levels of education from school to higher education.
  • The policy envisages broad based, multi-disciplinary, holistic Under Graduate education with flexible curricula, creative combinations of subjects, integration of vocational education and multiple entry and exit points with appropriate certification
  • The very first policy for education was promulgated in 1968 with the second one following in 1986.
